There is the official May holidays and the preceding week or the following week (which then sometimes coincides with ascension). Even Pentecost sometimes falls in May, but it`s usually june by then.

Avoiding the crowds is best if you come between school holidays and public holidays for a week, midweek or Long Weekend or just a few days in May.
